Compress Video

Reduce video file size with simple compression levels. Download a compatible MP4.

No file selected

Only upload media you have permission to process. Inputs are removed after processing; results expire after 30 minutes. No account required.

What this tool does

Video Compressor re-encodes your video as an H.264 MP4 with a smaller, more compatible data rate. Pick one of three levels: Light keeps the most detail (quality value 22), Balanced is the everyday default (28) and Strong targets the smallest file (34). Audio is converted to AAC at 128 kbps so the result plays everywhere.

What to expect

How much a video shrinks depends on how it was encoded before. Phone clips and screen recordings often shrink a lot; videos that are already efficient H.264 can shrink very little or even grow slightly. The result panel shows the real size change, and the output is always a web-optimized MP4 (fast-start) that plays before it fully downloads.

Supported formats and limits

Input: MP4, MOV, MKV, WEBM or AVI up to 128 MiB, 10 minutes long and 1080p (portrait videos are fine; the total pixel budget is what counts). Output: MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio.

Common errors and fixes

FILE_TOO_LARGE: the source exceeds 128 MiB — use a shorter clip or a lower-resolution export. VIDEO_TOO_LONG: media over 10 minutes cannot be processed; split it locally first. PROCESSING_TIMEOUT: long or dense videos can exceed the 15-minute processing budget; try Strong or a lower resolution. INVALID_FILE: the file could not be read as one of the supported containers.

Good to know

Which compression level should I choose?

Light (quality 22) keeps the most detail and is best when quality matters. Balanced (28) suits most everyday videos. Strong (34) produces the smallest files and is fine for rough or low-detail footage.

Why is my compressed file not much smaller?

Videos that were already encoded efficiently have little redundancy left to remove. If the source is a modern low-bitrate H.264 file, the result can be similar in size or slightly larger. The result panel always shows the real outcome before you download.

Does lowering the resolution help?

Yes — 720p or 480p outputs contain far less data than 1080p and also process faster. Choose Keep resolution to preserve full 1080p detail.

Will the audio quality change?

Audio is converted to AAC at 128 kbps, which is transparent for most spoken-word and music content. The original audio is not preserved bit-for-bit.

Can I compress 4K video?

No. The current launch limits processing to 1080p input (1920 pixels on the longer edge, about 2 megapixels in total). 4K sources are rejected in this release.

Are titles, subtitles or extra tracks kept?

No. The result keeps your first video and first audio track only; metadata, chapters, subtitles and extra streams are removed.

What are the file limits?

Up to 128 MiB, 10 minutes and 1920 pixels on either edge (2073600 total pixels; portrait supported), with up to 8 audio/video streams. Processing time depends on the operation. Uploads resume from the last completed chunk during this session; paused uploads expire after 15 minutes.

How long are files kept?

Inputs and temporary files are deleted after processing or failure. Download results within 30 minutes.

How to use Compress Video

  1. Select an authorized mp4, mov, mkv, webm, avi file.
  2. Choose the available options and start processing. Keep this browser session open — if you refresh, an in-flight task is offered for recovery on this page.
  3. Download the mp4 result before it expires. Keep your original file.

Converting between formats can change quality, and compression savings depend on the original codec and settings; some files may not become smaller.
